We are a young couple from Melbourne who have a great passion for stylish, elegant and earthy handmade products. Over the years we have amassed a large personal collection of Sri Lankan arts and crafts. NUGA was born from our desire to share Sri Lanka’s unique handicrafts with the world.

Each piece within our store has been handpicked by us. We have met the artisans who create them, watched them weave their magic and seen their dedication to perfecting each piece of art. We hope to deliver an exceptional experience to the community who visit our website.

“NUGA” is actually a name of a tree. In Hindu mythology, it is called as 'the wish-fulfilling tree', representing eternal life.

To tell you a little bit more about the tree, it is known as the “Banyan’ tree in English and is a type of fig native common to the Indian subcontinent.  It is a very large evergreen tree with copious aerial roots and dark red fruits.

In scientific terms, NUGA is considered as one of the most important keystone species. It provides fruits for animals in seasons when other trees don’t bear fruits. It is also considered as an umbrella species, as protecting these species indirectly protects many other species that make up the ecological community of its habitat.

We could not  think of a better name for our shop than this.

OUR MOTTO:  “Simplicity with a touch of elegance”

We draw our inspiration from the renowned architect Geoffrey Bawa whose designs capture elegance and simplicity. All our ceramic, clay and cement products are unique, stylish and simple with a mix of traditional and modern designs. We aim to keep the original fibres and material intact to preserve the natural beauty of our products.

For those who love something different in colour, we have a whole range of items in our Handloom section.  They come in bright and vibrant colours and in a variety of designs.

We are committed to providing a fair trade to both our suppliers and buyers as we value the efforts of our craftsmen and designers. We also endeavour to provide quality products at a competitive price to our customers.

"Thank you for joining us on this awesome journey and being a part of our story."
