Nuga, known as banyan tree in English is a type of fig native to the Indian subcontinent which is a very large evergreen tree with copious aerial roots and dark red fruits.
It’s known in Hindu mythology as 'the wish-fulfilling tree', representing eternal life.
The tree provides habitat for a number of animals and considered as one of the most important keystone species. It provides fruits for animals in seasons when other trees don’t bear fruits. It is also considered as an umbrella species, as protecting these species indirectly protects many other species that make up the ecological community of its habitat.
Nuga is a multipurpose tree with medicinal, ethno botanical properties, with socio cultural and spiritual significance. Though a giant in wild, Nuga is a common home and office houseplant; one plant that can remain indoors all year long.
